Procedure

Surgical procedure for men and women, which aims to remove excess skin and fat that is flabby either in the abdomen, thighs, arms or back. In the case of treating the abdomen it is called abdominal lipectomy or abdominoplasty. In this case the excess skin is removed and the muscles are treated to improve the contour. It produces a transverse scar at the lower abdominal level that can go from hip to hip, so that it is hidden inside the bathing

suit or underwear. Some scars and stretch marks below the navel may disappear in the segment of skin and fat that is removed. In patients who have undergone major dietary regimens have large areas of skin that does not have adequate elastic capacity so they must undergo lipectomies of the arms, thighs or back. In this event they must be careful not to present malnutrition that would lead to complications during and after surgery. The average surgical time is 2 to 4 hours depending on each case. In the abdominoplasty an incision is made at the level of the pubis (where the scar will be), through the lower abdominal fold, the excess skin and fat is lifted and dried; at this moment the abdominal muscles are brought closer to the midline and the oblique muscles are brought forward creating a kind of muscular corset that recreates the waist and restores the tone to the abdominal wall. Finally, the skin is sutured, leaving drainage tubes to avoid fluid accumulation. The specialist will define according to your evolution if you require hospitalization or not after the procedure.

Before and After

In the first consultation, Dr. Rafael Perez will analyze three fundamental points, the quantity and quality of the skin, the amount of fatty tissue and the size and condition of the muscles of the abdominal wall. The procedure to be planned will depend on the findings. You must inform your Plastic Surgeon about the use of medications, as well as about diseases, facial traumas or previous facial surgeries that may influence the procedure. If you are hypertensive (a) is possible to operate as long as it is controlled. If you have bad scarring, have any other disease, smoke, consume drugs such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, vitamin E, corticosteroids or have spontaneous or prolonged bleeding tell your plastic surgeon. All drugs that increase bleeding such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, vitamin E, omega 3, ginkgo biloba and other naturopathic medications should be discontinued.

Avoid prolonged lying down, walk short distances frequently and breathe with deep chest breaths to avoid pulmonary complications (accumulation of secretions and infection). Since the abdomen is swollen and you will feel discomfort, this should be controlled with analgesic medication. Your plastic surgeon will recommend the use of a lycra girdle and will schedule the removal of stitches and drains. The return to daily activities may begin to resume gradually towards the 1st to 2nd postoperative week and progressively the complete recovery will be presented. During the first 3 months the scar will be thick and red, which with proper management will improve its appearance.
